The Dallas Mavericks have optimism they will be able to re-sign Derrick Jones Jr. even if they also find a path to acquiring Klay Thompson, sources tell Marc Stein.

The Mavericks created space to use their full midlevel taxpayer midlevel by trading away Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons. The Mavericks could use Josh Green in a sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors to acquire Thompson. Thompson is widely expected to exit the Warriors this offseason with the team amenable to a sign-and-trade scenario.

If the Mavericks lose Green, the newly acquired Quintin Grimes figures to take on a bigger role. Jones emerged as a key three-and-D wing for the Mavericks on their run to The Finals. Jones is represented by Rich Paul.
