Billy Donovan's son named head coach of Windy City Bulls

After another mediocre season, the future of Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan is up in the air a bit. However, while this doesn’t guarantee anything, a recent coaching move by the Bulls G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls, might indicate how Chicago feels about Donovan. Billy Donovan III, the son of Billy Donovan, was named the new head coach for the Windy City Bulls on Wednesday, according to a tweet from Shams Charania.

“The Chicago Bulls plan to hire Billy Donovan III – son of Billy Donovan – as head coach of their NBA G League Windy City Bulls team, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium,” Shams Charania said in a tweet. “Donovan III served as an assistant coach for San Antonio's Austin Spurs affiliate in 2017.”

Billy Donovan was the head coach of the Florida basketball team for a long time as he was there from 1996-2015. His son, Billy Donovan III, spent his college basketball days with the Gators, and his dad was his coach as he played from 2013-2015.

Donovan III did not go on to play in the NBA, and he started his coaching career shortly after his college playing career ended. He started off as the head coach of Trinity Catholic High School, and after spending one year there, he spent one year as the head coach of Saint Francis Academy. He was then an assistant in the G League for the Austin Spurs in 2017.

Now, Donovan III is going back to the G League, this time as a head coach. He will be joining his dad in the Bulls organization, and that could mean that the plan in Chicago is to keep Billy Donovan there for the foreseeable future.

A lot of Bulls fans have been wondering what the team is going to do with Billy Donovan. Chicago hasn’t been awful under Donovan, but they haven’t been good either. Bulls fans are ready to take the next step, and a lot of the fan base wants the team to move on from Donovan.

Donovan signed a contract extension to remain the head coach of the Bulls for several more years before the start of the 2022-2023 season. The original four-year contract that he signed in 2020 would have ended at the conclusion of this current season.

Now that Billy Donovan III is the head coach of the Windy City Bulls, it seems like the plan for Chicago is to keep Donovan around, but that isn’t a guarantee. We should learn more about Donovan’s future throughout the course of the offseason.
