Dwight Howard drops Monty Williams recruitment pitch after Pistons firing

Monty Williams’ very brief and very expensive tenure with the Detroit Pistons came to an end on Wednesday just one year and seventeen days after it began. Following a dreadful 14-68 campaign, which included a 28-game losing streak near the beginning of the season, the Pistons decided to part ways with the former player and longtime NBA head coach. Given the tumultuous nature in which Williams’ last two stops concluded, there’s really no way to tell what might be next for him. But it turns out, Dwight Howard has an idea.

Although Dwight Howard hasn’t suited up stateside since 2022, he’s been keeping busy and staying involved with the game of basketball overseas. Howard made a highly-publicized debut in Taiwan back in November 2022, finishing his first game with the Taoyuan Leopards with an eye-popping 38 point, 25 rebound, 9 assist stat line. He would go on to be named an All-Star and compete in the league’s three-point contest for lord knows what reason.

At the moment, Howard is getting his Jackie Moon on, serving as both a player and a part owner of the newly formed Asian Tournament league in Taiwan. And because he has such a stake in the success of the league, Dwight is on the hunt for some NBA comrades to continue their basketball careers in Taiwan.

“Monty come coach in my league! Just bring some players with you!” Dwight Howard tweeted late on Wednesday night.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Dwight Howard over the last couple of years, it’s that he is going to shoot his shot.

Dwight Howard’s various recruiting attempts

Since deciding to continue his playing career in Taiwan back in 2022, Dwight Howard has tried (and failed) to recruit a number of NBA stars (and former stars) to join him in East Asia, seemingly capitalizing on every opportunity to inquire about bringing more talent to the unknown league. In Dwight’s eyes, Taiwan represented a second-chance for Ja Morant.

A final chance for Chris Paul.

Most famously, Dwight sent out the social media equivalent of a massive group text during the 2023 NBA Playoffs, calling on every player who had been underperforming in the postseason to join him in Taiwan.

Dwight Howard even swung for the fences, pleading with LeBron James (and Anthony Davis) to join him, even if it were only for one game.

Given Monty Williams’ potentially limited options, maybe Taiwan isn’t a bad move after all.
