The Sacramento Kings are in the midst of building a routine playoff contender. However, they’re already facing hurdles before the offseason officially begins. As it turns out, one player on the team is straight up asking for his release.

Former EuroLeague MVP, Sasha Vezenkov, officially asked the Kings to release him from the team, according to Mihalis Stefanou of Eurohoops. At this time, it’s not entirely clear why Vezenkov asked to be released.

“After an up-and-down first season in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings, Sasha Vezenkov may not come back to the franchise for his second contract year. According to Eurohoops sources, the 28-year-old forward has informed the team about his intention to leave. It is yet to be decided if he will seek another opportunity somewhere else in the NBA or if he will return to Europe. Last year, he signed a three-year 20-million contract, which is guaranteed for the first two seasons.”

The former EuroLeague MVP spent five years playing for the red-and-white Greek team before taking his talents to the NBA. Sasha Vezenkov earned the MVP award back in the 2014-15 season. However, he had a bit of a rocky year playing for the Sacramento Kings. He finished the season averaging 5.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game.

At 28 years old, Vezenkov certainly has plenty of playing time remaining in his career. So, he could end up playing for a different team in the NBA. Or, if he didn’t enjoy his time with the Kings he could opt to go back to EuroLeague. Either way, he should be able to garner plenty of interest.

Kings 2024 offseason outlook

The Kings have a solid roster but they could use some upgrades to become more competitive. As of now, DeAaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are the two stars on the roster. Meanwhile, Keegan Murray is a solid prospect who has the potential of becoming a star himself.

However, Sacramento would largely benefit from finding an improvement at shooting guard. Kevin Huerter is a solid player, however, he’d serve much better coming off the bench as a role player. Additionally, it’s about time the Kings find an eventual replacement for Harrison Barnes, as Barnes will be 33 years old next season.

It’s possible the Kings make a splash signing in free agency but it’s yet to be determined if any of the possible big names are interested in signing with Sacramento. At the very least, this roster isn’t too far away from becoming a yearly contender. Especially if Murray takes the necessary jump in development.

With that said, the Kings will be a team to watch throughout the offseason. Sacramento owns the 13th overall pick of the NBA Draft. Based on their needs it’d make sense for the front office to package that pick in a trade for a more proven player to improve the roster. But we’ll see how it plays out once the offseason officially begins.
