Jamison Battle‘s protective face mask wasn’t protective enough.

After initially sustaining a nasal fracture while on assignment with the Raptors 905, the rookie re-aggravated the injury on Monday night while contesting a shot attempt from Washington Wizards’ wing Bilal Coulibaly.

He was ultimately unable to finish the game.

Battle was hit in the protective face mask he has been required to wear since the injury as Coulibaly took a hard fall on the play. The Wizard’s sophomore was also ruled out for the remainder of the game due to right hamstring tightness.

Battle, 23, is averaging 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.8 assists in 41 games played this season. He leads all NBA rookies in three-point shooting at 43.6 per cent on 3.2 attempts per game.

After going undrafted in the 2024 NBA draft, Battle initially signed with the Raptors on an exhibit 10 contract, a deal that gives players a bonus for playing with an organization’s G League affiliate if they do not make the opening day roster.

The six-foot-seven wing eventually won a spot on the roster and was signed to a two-way contract. Battle’s performance — particularly as a knock-down shooter — eventually earned him a standard NBA deal after he used up 35 of the 50 games he was permitted to play on a two-way contract.
