John Wall believes he's the Wizards' all-time No. 1 player

John Wall has been on the news as of late. The former NBA point guard made it known that he desires to return to the league, no matter what role he may take on. Many would argue that Wall could still perform at a high level, considering how he was just on a roster over a year ago. And for diehard fans of the 33-year-old, it would be a treat to see the former Washington Wizards star showcase his tricks once again.

John Wall makes a bold claim

Speaking of the Wizards, Wall recently appeared on an episode of Podcast P, presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment. Engaging in discourse with his former teammate Paul George, the point guard was asked by George if he considers himself the greatest Washington player of all time.

“I know we had Gil (Gilbert Arenas) here earlier in the season and he mentioned that he would give the nod to you as being the greatest Wizard of all time,” George said to Wall. “Do you feel that way yourself?”

“It’s funny bro because I do,” Wall answered. “I know how much Gil means to the city and how he embraced the community the same way I did. I feel like I’m that guy, you know what I mean? Just for going number one (in the draft) and being there, embracing the city the way I did, the way they’re embracing me, I definitely call myself the greatest Wizard.”

George also asked Wall if the latter’s number two jersey should be retired by the Wizards, and the idea was something the point guard assented to.

“That would be something I would love man,” Wall said. “For my family, I would love that. For the team that drafted me number one, that would be great. I think for the city, they would love that and embrace that for sure.”

Wall’s responses may cause varying opinions, considering how the Wizards were also graced with players such as Elvin Hayes and the late Wes Unseld — two legends who led the team to the 1978 title. Nevertheless, Wall has quite the resume himself.

The speedy guard played a total of nine seasons for the Wizards, appearing the All-Star Game five times and being named to the All-NBA Third Team and the All-Defensive Second Team at different points of his career.

Wall had his best season during the Wizards’ 2016-17 campaign, averaging a double-double of 23.1 points and 10.7 assists per game. During the playoffs, he took it up a notch, putting up 27.2 points an outing in 13 games. The Wizards made the second round of the playoffs, ending their season with a tightly-fought seven-game series against the Boston Celtics.

All in all, Wall averaged 18.7 points and 8.9 assists throughout his Washington tenure.

As good as his accolades are, Wall is remembered more for his electrifying highlights on the floor. His athleticism and craftiness with the ball resulted in acrobatic finishes at the rim, monster blocks, and bursts of speed that seem inhuman. John Wall is a Washington Wizards icon, and will always have a special place in the hearts of DC sports fans.
