The Los Angeles Lakers may have already introduced their newest trade acquisition Luka Doncic in a press conference, but somehow, the fact that Doncic is now a member of the Purple and Gold remains something difficult to believe. Fans are still digesting the new reality that Doncic is now a Laker, so imagine just how big of an adjustment it is for the man who never thought in a million years that the Dallas Mavericks would trade him away.

Doncic, as head coach JJ Redick said (via Jovan Buha of The Athletic), is still “processing” this new reality of his. But at the very least, he is already starting the process of acclimating to his new team, as Redick said that Doncic went through workouts today and yesterday and that his presence on the bench during the Lakers’ 122-97 win over the Los Angeles Clippers was very helpful.

Indeed, it will take some time for Doncic to process everything, especially when he was also blindsided by this turn of events. It’s not as if he was playing that poorly for the Mavericks, and his track record ever since he entered the league in 2018 speaks for itself already. But the Mavs’ concerns regarding his lifestyle appeared to be too much for them to bear, and as a result, it paved the way for the Lakers to acquire him.

When everything sinks in for Doncic, one would think that he would be motivated to prove the Mavericks wrong, much to the Lakers’ benefit. And with LeBron James by his side, the most talented player he’s going to suit up with, there may be no ceiling to what the Purple and Gold can achieve, provided that they maintain the same level of effort on the glass and on defense that they’ve been showing over the past few games.

Luka Doncic and JJ Redick briefly shared a locker room on the Mavericks back in 2021, when they met the Clippers in an instant classic of a first-round matchup that they lost in seven games. But now, they’re going to be reunited as player and coach on the Lakers.

Redick’s gears are already turning regarding how to make the pairing of Doncic and LeBron James work. If there’s anyone who knows of Doncic’s work ethic firsthand, it’s Redick, and it’ll be up to him to put the Slovenian superstar and the team’s franchise cornerstone in the best position to succeed.
