Lakers' Luka Doncic makes striking admission after atrocious night vs. Hornets

Luka Doncic is still not in his top form. His performance Wednesday night for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Charlotte Hornets at Crypto.com Arena pretty much summed up his struggles so far with his new team, as he shot just 5-for-18 from the floor and bricked all but one of his attempts from behind the arc in Los Angeles’ surprising 100-97 home loss at the hands of the lottery-bound Hornets.
Following LA’s defeat, Doncic talked to reporters during the postgame press conference and admitted that he’s still trying to get into his rhythm.
“Obviously, you know, it’s gonna take a little time,” Doncic said, per Spectrum SportsNet. “A lot of rustiness from my part. Started the game with four or five turnovers. That can’t happen,” the Slovenian superstar added.
Doncic turned the ball over five times in the first quarter, though, he only had one more from that point until the end of the contest. Still, it was clear that the 25-year-old guard was not quite his old self yet, the one that finished third in the NBA Most Valuable Player voting in the 2024-25 NBA season. Before he was traded to the Lakers, Doncic last played on Christmas Day against the Minnesota Timberwolves and only appeared in his first game since the calendar flipped to 2025 on Feb. 10 versus the Utah Jazz.
Through three games in Lakers uniform, Doncic has averaged 14.7 points on a poor 35.6 percent shooting from the floor while grabbing 6.7 rebounds and dishing out 5.3 assists. He also committed an average of 4.0 turnovers in that stretch where the Lakers also have gone 1-2.
Doncic needs to get it going like the old Luka if the Lakers are to go places in the 2024-25 season. It seems that it is just a matter of time before Doncic’s lethal form returns, as the Lakers look to break out of their two-game slump.
Against the Hornets, the Lakers heavily relied once again on the 40-year-old body of LeBron James to carry them. James led his team with 26 points to go along with 11 rebounds and seven assists while shooting 10-for-22 from the field but those numbers were not enough to tow LA into a win.
Up next for Doncic and the Lakers are back-to-back road games against the Portland Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
