The Dallas Mavericks made a baffling midseason move by trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. This blockbuster deal sends Doncic to the West Coast, where he will team up with LeBron James, while Anthony Davis joins forces with Kyrie Irving in Dallas.
Less than a day after his trade to Dallas, Davis shared a heartfelt farewell on Instagram. The newest member of the Mavericks expressed his deep appreciation for the Lakers, his former teammates, and the city of Los Angeles.
LeBron James’ farewell to Anthony Davis
LeBron James was quick to respond to Davis’ heartfelt farewell message. The Lakers superstar showed his support for his former teammate, now headed to Dallas, with a strong message in the comments section. “My DOG !!!! You dat muthafucka!! Go do you CHAMP!!!! ” wrote James.
Davis has officially played his last game alongside LeBron James. Almost no one anticipated that his brief 10-minute appearance on January 28 against the Philadelphia 76ers would mark the end of his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The LeBron-AD duo wraps up after six seasons and one NBA championship. Some might say neither would have secured a title in L.A. without the other. Now, James has made his feelings about his former frontcourt partner abundantly clear.
That's just the nature of the NBA, even when it comes from one of the most shocking trades in league history. With emotions still running high, Davis took a moment to thank Lakers fans while embracing the new journey ahead with the Mavericks.
“LA, 6 years ago, I came here with the vision to win a Championship, and I will never forget the moment we did!” Davis started his post. “The business of basketball is a business just like other businesses… I am grateful to the city where my first ring came from, grew my family and friendships and I will always have a home here. My family and I thank everyone who made this place home and we are still thinking of those that lost their homes in the fires.”
“To my teammates: our friendships go beyond a locker room and a jersey…LA will always have a special place in my heart,” the former Lakers center continued. “Every great story has an exciting next chapter…”
“Dallas – Here we come!” Davis concluded.
Davis time with the Lakers
Anthony Davis spent six seasons in Los Angeles, where he was instrumental in the Lakers’ 2020 championship run. Davis has racked up ten All-Star appearances, four All-NBA First Team selections, and one Second Team nod. He was also included in five All-Defensive teams and led the league in blocks three times.
Before the Mavericks traded for him, Davis posted 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.1 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game in 42 appearances, averaging 34.3 minutes. He's also set to play in the upcoming All-Star Game.
At this stage, the Lakers are turning the page to a new chapter. Luka Doncic steps in to fill Davis’ role as the franchise’s new cornerstone alongside LeBron James.
