Los Angeles Lakers veteran LeBron James has a very simple reaction to passing Michael Jordan as the oldest NBA player to score 40 points in a game.
“What do I think? That I’m old,” James said humorously, per ESPN, after helping his team defeat the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. James scored 42 points in the Lakers win. The team defeated Golden State, 120-112.
“The biggest thing is we got the win, obviously,” James added when asked about being linked to Jordan. “But throughout my journey, anytime I’ve been named or in the category or whatever the case, crossed paths with any of the greats, it’s always humbling. Just to know where I come from. And I love the game so much. So it’s pretty cool.”
James is 40 years and 38 days old. He’s just ahead of Jordan who was 40 years and 4 days old, when he scored 43 for the Washington Wizards in a 2003 game.
James’ efforts helped the Lakers win their fourth consecutive game. Los Angeles is now 30-19 on the season.
The Lakers are now relying on LeBron James to lead them to the postseason
James is now the leading scorer on the team, after the Lakers dealt away Anthony Davis. The 40-year-old star is now tasked with leading the new look team, that includes Luka Doncic and Mark Williams.
“I think with LeBron, we’ve run out of words and superlatives and descriptions to sort of capture what he’s doing at this stage of his career and at this age,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “It continues to be remarkable, it really does. And he really led us tonight.”
James is now the oldest and youngest player in the NBA to ever score 40 points in a game. That’s quite unique, and shows how versatile and consistent he has been in his lengthy career.
James now has one final challenge ahead of him. He must work with new additions and Doncic and Williams to win one more title for Los Angeles. That might be his greatest accomplishment, considering his age and having so many new roster pieces now around him.
James is intrigued by the prospect of playing alongside Doncic. Doncic has been hurt, and is expected to possibly play on Monday for Los Angeles.
“I’ve been watching him since he got into this league,” James said about Doncic. “And what he’s capable of doing is special. He’s a super-duper special talent.”
James may be old, but he definitely has plenty of gas left in his tank. Los Angeles next plays Indiana on Saturday.
