DALLAS — It goes without saying, but the Dallas Mavericks’ biggest move ahead of the NBA trade deadline was dealing Luka Doncic away for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first round pick. Dallas also made a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, acquiring Caleb Martin as part of the deal. He has yet to play with the Mavs due to a right hip strain, but head coach Jason Kidd provided an important Martin injury update before Saturday night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
“He’s (Martin) doing extremely well, there’s a lot of positive things around him right now so he’s trending in the right direction,” Kidd told reporters. “Hopefully here in the next couple days we have some really good news. His rehab sessions have been going really good, hasn’t had any setbacks… Hopefully he’s back here soon, sooner than later.”
It sounds as if Martin may return soon, assuming he continues to avoid setbacks. The Mavericks could certainly use the help.
Caleb Martin could make Mavericks debut soon
At 32-28, Dallas is currently sitting in eighth place in the competitive Western Conference. However, they are just one game ahead of the 10th place Sacramento Kings. On the other side, the Mavs are only a half-game back of the No. 6 seed (Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers have the same record as of this story’s writing).
Adding Martin to the rotation would provide the Mavericks with extra depth. At 6’5″, Martin can play shooting guard or small forward. His versatility will give Jason Kidd extra lineup flexibility.
With Philadelphia in 2024-25, Martin averaged 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals per outing. He was also shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from three-point land.
At the moment, Dallas is focused on preparing to play against Milwaukee without Caleb Martin, Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford.
