Rumors have been swirling ever since news broke that the Sacramento Kings were open to trading former All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox. Although the Kings had recently turned around their season following the firing of head coach Mike Brown, that didn’t appear to be enough to convince the front office that at least a partial rebuild wasn’t on the horizon.

One team that has been linked to Fox, and reported as Fox’s preferred destination on the trade market, is the San Antonio Spurs. Now, more light is being shed on how that deal almost already happened–and then reportedly fell through.

“Momentum picked up on a four-team De'Aaron Fox trade Friday but then cooled off,” reported NBA insider Matt Moore on his Substack. “As of now, Stephon Castle is not thought to be in the deal, according to a league source.”

Castle was indeed the name that many Spurs fans showed hesitancy to part with in a potential deal for De’Aaron Fox, given the rookie’s impressive showing so far this year.

Still, opportunities to pair Victor Wembanyama with a legitimate number two option are not abundant, and there’s certainly a large portion of Spurs fans who would like to see the team swing for the fences.

Saturday evening’s shocking trade that sent Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a package centered around Anthony Davis shook up the entire NBA world’s perspective of what a potential trade could look like ahead of the deadline, which is in less than a week.

Now, it would appear that nothing is off the table, especially given that there hadn’t even been rumblings about Doncic’s availability in recent weeks.

With a player like Fox, who has made it very clear that he would like to depart for greener pastures, it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Kings move him in the next several days, even if it’s not to the Spurs.

In any case, the Kings will next take the floor on Monday evening on the road vs the Minnesota Timberwolves.
