Eastern Michigan’s Emoni Bates goes on unreal scoring spree
01/24/2023 09:53 PM
Eastern Michigan basketball star Emoni Bates had one of the greatest individual stretches in recent college basketball memory on Tuesday night, scoring 29 straight points in the first half of a game against Toledo. With 13:18 remaining in the first half and Eastern Michigan trailing 14-6, Emoni Bates took over the game like no player in college basketball has this season. It took 11 minutes for the 18-year-old to go on his 29-point barrage, which included seven made three-pointers. By the end of the first half, Bates was responsible for close to 83% of Eastern Michigan’s points. The performance by Bates was so special that even LeBron James recognized the sophomore on Twitter. A heroic 43-point effort on 15-of-23 shooting wasn’t enough for Bates to lead his team to victory. Toledo topped Eastern Michigan 84-79. The Eagles fell to 4-16 on the season. A transfer from Memphis, Bates was thought to be one of the most talented players in the 2021 recruiting class. After a disappointing freshman campaign for the Tigers, the 6’10” forward transferred to Eastern Michigan, where he’s become the team’s leading scorer. Bates entered Tuesday’s game averaging 19.3 points per game for the Eagles, more than doubling his 9.3 points per game at Memphis. Bates’ stretch still didn’t come close to breaking the college basketball record for consecutive points without a teammate scoring. Temple’s Bill Mlkvy set the all-time mark that still stands today in 1951, stringing together 54 points in a row without another Owls’ player putting the ball through the net.
