Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs can win three in a row if they can defeat the NBA Cup defending champions tonight

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don't troll and don't swear too much.

The NBA Cup is back this year, and the Spurs play their first game in this year's tournament tonight against the Lakers in San Antonio. The Lakers won the NBA Cup last season, and with LeBron James still performing at an elite level as he approaches his 40th birthday, they have got to be one of the favorites again this year. The Spurs lost all four of their cup games last year, and they'd like to improve on that this year and make some noise in the mid-season tourney. It's mostly for bragging rights, but there's a nice trophy and a financial bonus for the players that is especially meaningful for the players at the end of the bench making near the NBA minimum.

Anthony Davis is the top scorer for LA, but he's been struggling with injury (plantar fasciitis). He's questionable tonight, but if he plays, he would provide an interesting defensive challenge for Victor Wembanyama. If we know anything about this year's Spurs team, it's that they can beat anybody, and they can lose to anybody. Let's hope they can keep the mistakes to a minimum and pull off the upset tonight. It's a quick turnaround for the Silver and Black, as they travel to Dallas for a game against the Mavericks tomorrow night at 7:30 PM.
