Spurs kick off Summer League today in the California Classic
On June 24, Petteri Koponen signed on as an assistant coach at Summer League with the San Antonio Spurs. Three days later, his draft rights — from 2007 — were traded to the New York Knicks.
In what looks like a humorous moment of the 2024 NBA Draft, the Knicks acquired the draft rights to Petteri Koponen as part of their trade landing them Ariel Hukporti.
Dallas announced today that they have acquired the draft rights to the 51st overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft Melvin Ajinça from NY in exchange for the draft rights to Ariel Hukporti (58th overall pick in 2024), the rights to Petteri Koponen (30th overall pick in 2007) and cash. pic.twitter.com/rjTqZJVB3A

Koponen responded in a tweet:
I'm honored @nyknicks, but I'm still going to honor my commitment with @spurs. Of course, a financially ridiculous offer could change things. + I got the new hip! I'm ready! https://t.co/m4K82Prkcm

"Im honored @nyknicks, but I'm still going to honor my commitment with @spurs," Kopnonen wrote in a quote tweet of the Mavericks announcing the deal. "Of course, a financially ridiculous offer could change things. + I got the new hip! I'm ready!"
Koponen has also just been confirmed as the new head coach of the New Zealand Breakers.
The Spurs first Summer League game, in the California Classic, tips off tonight at 7:30 PM on NBATV.
