LOS ANGELES — On Tuesday, the primary storyline centered around Luka Doncic playing against his former team for the first time as the Los Angeles Lakers were set to host the Dallas Mavericks. Before the game, however, Lakers head coach JJ Redick was asked about Anthony Davis, who was sent to Dallas in the trade that brought Doncic to LA. AD’s return would have been more of a storyline if he was healthy, but Davis is currently out with an injury.

“I’ll start with just the fact that I miss being around him everyday,” Redick said of Davis. “He’s a fantastic human being, wonderful  teammate… For a guy who is a superstar, been in the Olympics, won the Finals, been All-NBA, (Davis) probably had a decent amount of skepticism with a coach who has never coached before. Former podcaster if you will. For him to just accept me and be open to a relationship… Was big time. Speaks a lot to who he is as a person… Certainly miss him as a player… He’s just a pleasure to be around.”

Although Davis is still out, he did take shots before the Mavericks-Lakers game.

The Mavs star is hoping to return as soon as possible. Davis is expected to be re-evaluated in early March. He does not have a set return date as of this story’s writing, though.

The Mavericks are trying to stay afloat despite dealing with a plethora of injury concerns. Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford are among the Mavs who are currently out with injuries.

A win on Tuesday would prove to be a significant momentum boost for the team. Defeating the Lakers in Los Angeles is never an easy task, however. Dallas will look to get the job done on Tuesday night despite Anthony Davis’ injury absence.
